This Vintage Shirvan rug, woven in the Caucasus during the 1940s, is a confident and highly decorative example of mid-20th-century village weaving. The composition is anchored by a vibrant madder-red field filled with a structured array of stylised geometric motifs, including rosettes, hooked medallions and angular floral forms. These motifs are arranged in balanced horizontal registers, a characteristic feature of Shirvan design, creating a sense of order while retaining the lively, expressive quality of handwoven work.

The borders are particularly well articulated, formed by multiple guard stripes surrounding a bold main border of repeating geometric medallions. Woven in tones of ivory, indigo, soft blue, green and warm ochre, the borders provide a strong visual frame and reinforce the architectural clarity for which Shirvan rugs are renowned. The colour palette is derived from traditional natural dyes, now gently softened with age, giving the rug warmth and depth without compromising its graphic impact.

Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, this Shirvan rug was made with durability in mind, reflected in its robust handle and crisp drawing. Its proportions make it well suited to hallways, kitchens, studies or layered within larger living spaces, where its strong geometry and rich colour can anchor an interior. As an authentic vintage Caucasian Shirvan rug, it offers both decorative strength and historical character, appealing to interiors that value timeless design and genuine craftsmanship.
