This vintage Persian Tabriz rug is a finely detailed example of one of Iran’s most established weaving traditions. Hand-knotted in Tabriz, in north-western Iran, the rug features an elaborate central medallion composition surrounded by an exceptionally detailed floral and animal-filled field. The design is characteristic of the sophisticated workshop weaving for which Tabriz has long been renowned, combining precise drawing with a complex, carefully balanced layout.
At the centre is an intricate blue medallion set against a rich red ground, framed by an ivory field of scrolling vines and floral motifs. Throughout the composition are numerous finely drawn animals and birds, including deer and other traditional Persian pictorial elements, woven amongst flowering branches and foliage. The main field is enclosed by a substantial series of borders, incorporating dark navy, ivory and muted brown tones with alternating cartouches and floral medallions. The softened palette and gentle variation in colour are particularly attractive, giving the rug the character associated with an older, naturally aged Persian carpet.
Tabriz has been an important centre of Persian carpet production for centuries and is particularly associated with highly accomplished workshop rugs. Traditionally hand-knotted using wool, often over a cotton foundation, Tabriz carpets are recognised for their comparatively fine weave and ability to reproduce intricate curvilinear, floral and pictorial designs. This example demonstrates that tradition particularly well, with considerable detail retained throughout its densely patterned field.
As a vintage piece, the rug is offered in its existing condition and requires some restoration. The fringes require repair and there is a small amount of wear through the central area, consistent with its age, natural use and historic character. The price reflects the rug's current condition. London House Rugs has a specialist in-house cleaning and restoration team, and the fringes and distressed areas can be professionally restored for an additional cost if requested.
