Leaf green and mustard yellow make this rug unusually animated for a patchwork design. Broad rectangles of strong green sit beside lighter olive, cream and blush pink, while occasional slate blue sections cool the arrangement. Within individual panels, fragments of floral ornament appear and fade, adding detail without obscuring the larger blocks of colour.
This rug measures 255 by 357 centimetres, giving the patchwork considerable presence on the floor. Some sections are almost square, others distinctly elongated, and their changing proportions prevent the layout from becoming a regular grid. The brightest greens are distributed across the composition rather than gathered around a centre. There is no enclosing floral border, so the colour continues right up to the outline. The decorative interest lies partly in the way this rug treats familiar carpet ornament. Afghan rugs belong to a weaving landscape in which geometric and floral vocabularies both have a place. Here the small patterned fragments are secondary to the patchwork arrangement: outlines that might once have been read as continuous decoration become individual passages of line within coloured rectangles.
This rug would make a confident starting point for a room scheme. A large sofa in cream or muted stone would give the green space to register, while ochre cushions could draw out the mustard panels. It could also work beneath a dining table, where the generous outer areas would preserve the varied colour arrangement around the furniture.
