This large Turkish Döşemealtı rug is a distinctive example of the traditional weaving associated with the Döşemealtı district of Antalya in southern Turkey. The region, situated close to the Taurus Mountains, has a long-established rug-making tradition influenced by the weaving culture of the Yörük communities of Anatolia. Döşemealtı rugs are particularly recognised for their substantial wool construction, strong geometric drawing and rich use of red and deep blue.
The expansive field of this rug has a warm red ground covered with an orderly arrangement of large cruciform motifs, interspersed with smaller hooked diamond forms. Each motif contains further geometric detailing in indigo blue, ivory, brown and touches of turquoise. Small variations between the repeated forms are characteristic of its handmade construction and prevent the otherwise symmetrical composition from appearing overly uniform.
A particularly attractive feature is the extensive border arrangement. Several narrow geometric guard borders surround the main field before meeting a broad dark indigo border decorated with large stylised motifs. Ivory detailing provides a strong contrast between the red and blue areas, while the numerous smaller patterns throughout the borders give the rug an impressive level of intricacy when viewed at close range.
Döşemealtı weaving developed as part of the wider textile traditions of southern Anatolia, where rugs were traditionally produced from wool for use within the home. Designs were constructed from a vocabulary of geometric and highly stylised motifs, with patterns passed between generations of weavers rather than following the more formal floral compositions associated with many Persian workshop rugs.
The generous proportions and repeating all-over design make this rug particularly well suited to a large sitting room, dining room or other substantial interior. Its combination of a strong red ground, deep indigo borders and traditional Anatolian geometry gives it considerable presence while remaining highly practical as a decorative floor covering.
