Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Is A Pakistani Rug?

A hand-made Pakistani carpet, often known as a hand-made Pakistani rug, is an oriental rug woven in Pakistan. Handmade Pakistani rugs are durable, long-lasting, feature unique designs, and their craftsmanship is admired worldwide.

The weavers of Pakistan make carpets using natural materials such as wool, cotton and silk.

The majority of Pakistan's contemporary piled oriental rugs are made for export. The Pakistan Buchara or Bokhara carpets, for example, are well-known.

The carpet industry in Pakistan heavily expanded when the country gained independence. Many cities and provinces, particularly Karachi, were active in producing carpets for export around the world.

Examples of modern Pakistani handmade rugs can be seen all over the world. The rich Persian style of design dates back to the Mughal Empire.

In Pakistan, rug/carpet weaving is done in both factory and cottage settings, and because the hand-spun wool in lots of Pakistani carpets comes from Australia and New Zealand, they usually have a lustrous sheen.

  • The History Of Antique Pakistani Rugs

With the arrival of the earliest Muslim conquerors, the Turkic Ghaznavids and Afghan Ghaurids, carpet weaving may have been introduced into the area of modern-day Pakistan as early as the eleventh century.

Local craftsmen borrowed Persian techniques and designs under the patronage of the Mughals. The themes and artistic elements prevalent in Mughal architecture were incorporated into carpets woven in Punjab during the period (commonly referred to as Lahore carpets today).

During the Mughal period, the carpets made in South Asia became famous. Demand for them spread abroad and their designs and knot density were distinctive.

As early as the seventeenth century, carpets produced in Lahore were the first to reach European markets, notably England.

Today, many Mughal-era Lahore carpets may be seen in museums and private collections worldwide. During the Mughal dynasty, important carpets were also created in Multan, once in India.

  • Where Are Rugs Made In Pakistan?

Today, there are many different types of rugs produced in Pakistan; hand-knotted rugs made by the tribal people of Pakistan are some of the most sought after hand-made rugs in the world.

Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi are the three main cities that manufacture rugs. Each city has different designs and patterns.

  • How Are Pakistani Rugs Made?

Their wefts and warps are made of pure cotton, making them soft and durable. However, making them is an arduous task that requires months of work.

Families who have been weaving textile art for generations make these authentic hand-made rugs. After finishing the handweaving process, the rugs are coloured with natural dyes and then stonewashed to enhance their design features. The time spent depends on the knot density, sizes, materials and dye type.

  • Hand Woven Rugs Vs Hand-Knotted

The difference between hand woven and knotted area rugs is the carpet weaving process. Each Pakistani handwoven rug is hand-made, but not every hand-made rug is a hand-knotted area rug.

Embellishing the homes of connoisseurs of fine art and design for over 5000 years, hand-knotted carpets are the "crème de la crème" of the carpet world. Pakistani hand knotted rugs are premium collections of the finest handspun wool & silk fibres intricately woven by artisans with an unparalleled obsession with perfection. Pakistani Rugs also represent some of the highest quality rugs available.

  • How Many Knots Per Square Inch Indicates A Quality Rug?

Knot density is a factor you should consider when buying a rug.

Knot densities in Pakistani carpets range from 40 to 350 knots per square inch. The terms "farrasie" and "palesk" describe these.

  • Pakistani Rugs Are Made From The Finest Raw Materials

Pakistani rugs are made by weaving wool or cotton yarns into beautiful patterns and there are many different types of rugs.

Knowing which is best for a particular environment can be confusing, with so many carpets to choose from. In Pakistan, rugs are generally crafted from cotton, wool or silk. Each of these materials has specific properties which add to the carpet and make rugs suitable for various spaces.

    • Silk is the softest material when you step on it but is expensive compared to other raw materials.
    • Compared with other fabrics, the finest Pakistani wool rugs are most likely to last the longest. Wool doesn't shed much, and it is highly stain resistant, so it's perfect for households with children and pets.
    • Cotton is lightweight and affordable. It makes the room feel light and airy and is easy to maintain or wash.
  • Rich Colours Speak A Language Of Their Own

The majority of Pakistani carpets are knotted in red or dark colours. The colours used in these rugs are vibrant and the patterns are usually woven in wool, coloured with natural dyes.

  • Pakistani Handmade Rugs - Patterns & Styles

Today, there are many designs produced in Pakistan, ranging from the Mughal Kashmir and Persian designs to the finest quality Bokharas.

The designs are often inspired by nature. Some of the most popular designs include geometric floral patterns, tribal, abstract and Persian motifs.

    Pakistani Bokhara Rugs

The name of this type comes from the town of Bokhara in Central Asia.

A Pakistani rug made of wool or silk, the Bokhara rug is woven by hand using a technique called 'Ghiordes'. The pattern is created by joining together two rows of knots called the Ghiordes knot. These rugs are usually used for floor coverings.

Bokhara rugs are made in large quantities in Pakistan. Their production is similar to Turkmen rugs, but they differ significantly. They are woven exclusively to be exported. The most popular pattern is the Ersari rug. The elephant's foot design is also ubiquitous.

Bokhara rugs are very popular among people who love carpets. Their designs are based on classic geometrical shapes. The colours are usually red or gold. The traditional Turkish weaving technique, called Ghiordes knot or senna, makes them even more durable.

A traditional handwoven carpet made by nomadic tribesmen in Central Asia, this rug is woven using wool yarns and natural dyes. The colours used in this Pakistani rug are earthy tones and browns.

A century ago, rugs in designs like these were woven by Turkmen people north of present-day Afghanistan, who bartered them for goods they couldn't produce themselves.

Their weaving accumulated in bazaars like Bokhara. Later the name of the town became associated with the rugs themselves, and this historical error continues today.

Bokhara rugs are made of cotton and wool and sometimes with "silk" inlays. They can be found at low knot density (50 knots per square inch) to very high knot density (300 knots per square inch). Silk is almost always artificial silk, made from bamboo. Most wool sourced is from New Zealand.

The thick pile varies in length depending on the cutting of the rug. Some rugs are double piled, giving them more thickness and depth. The weaving technique makes sure the rug stays flat and doesn't curl up.

Red and rust colours are primarily found in these rugs, including ivory, navy, green, slate, teal, peach, rose and orange. Designs consist of rows of Tekke medallions, similar to ones used in Turkoman Style Rugs, and are named according to Turkoman tribal groups, such as Yomuds, Sailors and Erzaris.

    Baluchi Rugs

Baluchistan is one of Pakistan's most culturally rich provinces and the land where handwoven Baluchi rugs are made.
