A vintage Persian Mashad/Meshad rug hand knotted in the northeastern part of Iran. This rug has a classic all-over floral design and rich colours of reds, pinks and blues. It started life as a larger, more rectangular piece but has since had its size amended to give an unusual square shape and has been re-knotted together along the centre of the rug. The sprays of flowers, fronds and palmettes throughout the borders and central area are typical of Mashad rugs to this day.
Mashad rugs are made in the Khorassan region near and around the city of Mashad. The routes of Mashad rug design dates back all the way to the 1500s, and they are traditionally large rectangular pieces.
The lustrous wool and rich, classic colours used in this rug are well suited to various spaces. Whether a contemporary, minimalist setting that needs a splash of colour or a period setting, looking for that classic design touch.
