A geometric Afghan rug with a hybrid Kazak and Gabbeh design. It features diamonds and flowers throughout the rug, with each diamond woven in a Kazak style and then in a Gabbeh style for each flower. A rich sky blue ground colour is a more unusual feature of this piece, and this is mixed with red, orange and cream tones. There are a lot of design features within this piece, which took considerable time to weave.
The rug has no central medallion and has what is known as an all-over design. However, it does have three strips of diamond motifs and two more prominent areas of flower motifs which provide a focal point for the eye. The combination of traditional rug styles gives this piece a more contemporary feel, as does the unusual sky blue ground colour.
The rug was hand knotted from hand-spun Afghan wool, which is what gives it a soft lustre and adds to its durability.
This Afghan Kazak Gabbeh is a versatile rug and can be incorporated into both traditional and contemporary settings. It would be well placed in areas that require a soft feel underfoot, such as bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.
