This Antique Caucasian Kurdi rug, woven circa 1930, is a striking example of tribal craftsmanship from the Kurdish weaving traditions of the Caucasus. Characterised by its elongated runner format and bold yet finely balanced proportions, the rug features a deep indigo field organised into a disciplined lattice of stylised floral and botanical motifs, each rendered with a distinctly geometric hand. The precision of the repeat pattern is softened by the expressive irregularities typical of village and nomadic production, giving the piece both structure and vitality.

The richly layered borders are a defining feature, combining multiple guard stripes with rosette and reciprocal motifs in warm madder red, soft terracotta, saffron, pale blues and ivory. These borders frame the field with rhythmic complexity, while the stepped, angular drawing reflects the Kurdish aesthetic vocabulary rather than the curvilinear forms associated with workshop carpets. The colour palette is derived from traditional natural dyes, now gently mellowed with age, lending depth and harmony without losing clarity.

Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, this rug was made for practical daily use, which accounts for its durable handle and confident scale. Today, it functions beautifully as a statement hallway runner, stair landing piece, or in a long gallery space, where its strong verticality and historic character can be fully appreciated. As an authentic early 20th-century Kurdi rug from the Caucasus, it offers both decorative presence and cultural significance, appealing to collectors and interiors that value genuine tribal textiles with history and integrity.
