This antique Persian Bakhtiar rug, dating to circa 1900, originates from the Zagros mountain region of western Iran, where the Bakhtiari tribes have long been known for producing some of the most durable and visually distinctive carpets in Persian weaving. These rugs were traditionally woven for everyday use within tribal households, resulting in pieces that combine robust construction with highly individual, expressive designs. Bakhtiar rugs are particularly recognised for their compartmentalised patterns, often referred to as “garden designs,” symbolising cultivated landscapes and natural abundance.

The rug features a richly saturated red field structured into a lattice of repeating panels, each containing stylised floral motifs, palmettes, and geometric interpretations of trees and botanical forms. Accents of deep indigo, soft ivory, and muted blues create contrast and definition, while the symmetrical arrangement lends the composition a sense of order and rhythm. The border, bold and intricately detailed, frames the design with a sequence of angular motifs that echo the tribal character of the piece.

Woven from high-quality wool, Bakhtiar rugs are known for their density and longevity, making them particularly suited to high-traffic interiors. The natural dyes have softened gracefully over time, giving the rug a warm patina that enhances its depth and authenticity. This piece embodies the enduring appeal of Bakhtiar weaving—practical, decorative, and deeply rooted in Persian tribal tradition.
