Afghan Ziegler Rug

This rug is around thirty years old and has areas of wear.

Hand knotted in hand-spun wool, this elaborate Afghan Ziegler rug features a bold repeating floral pattern, influenced by Sultanabad design. During the finishing process, this Ziegler would have been thoroughly washed with hundreds of buckets of water and scrubbed with brushes to reduce the intensity of the dye, giving it a more subtle and muted look. Unlike most rugs, Zieglers (Zeiglers) get their name from the rug design as opposed to the city or tribe from which they derive. The soft pallet and striking patterns used in this piece capture the essence of Ziegler rug design and the use of contrasting reds and blues are clearly an Iranian influence.
