Close, offset rows of small brown guls animate the ivory field of this rug. Their lobed outlines give them a flower-like character, and little connecting details make the repeat feel almost continuous. A horizontal group in deeper burgundy interrupts the otherwise earthy colouring, drawing the eye across the upper half of the composition. Around the field, rust, brown and cream borders alternate compact geometric flowers with diamond forms.

This Afghan Bokhara rug has an unusually gentle colour balance for a design associated with strong repetition. The light ground keeps the many motifs distinct, while the darker border supplies most of the visual weight. Fine outlines in charcoal sharpen selected details without changing the warm, predominantly brown impression.

The design rewards a closer look at the small differences within its regular spacing. Bokhara is a historical trade name used for carpets related to Turkmen design traditions. It takes its name from Bukhara, a trading centre in present-day Uzbekistan, rather than identifying the place of manufacture of every rug sold under the term. Repeated guls are central to that broader family of patterns; this example is identified as Afghan. Its 259 × 169 cm proportions would suit a sitting area, a study or the open space at the foot of a bed. Leather, walnut and linen would echo the earthy colours, while a pale floor would emphasise the outline. Positioning this rug so that the burgundy row remains visible would preserve one of its most distinctive features.
